FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by American inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, with inspiration and assistance from physicist and MIT professor Woodie Flowers. FIRST has provided opportunities for many students K-12 using the concept of Gracious Professionalism. Gracious Professionalism (often shortened to GP) is one of the key values of FIRST, it encourages everyone to compete but at the same time be helping out their partners and competitors.
